Over the past 24 months, several driving forces have advanced the upstream industry mindset on water recycling, causing reuse to rise sharply. But there’s still plenty of room to grow, and we take a look at why, where things stand now, and what’s next in water recycling.

If you are interested in this trend, we highly recommend attending the best oilfield water conference on the schedule this fall. The Oilfield Water Connection Industry Update is happening on October 4 in Houston, and Infill Thinking will be in the room…

You’ve probably noticed an uptick in water research here at Infill Thinking (example 1, 2, and 3). And we aren’t alone… check out newly launched oilfieldwater.com.

So when did it begin and what does the trend in interest look like?

In research, going down one path often leads to another. And that’s often when things become most interesting.

While updating our recycled water leader board chart, first introduced in 4Q18, we got side-tracked by a quick thought exercise. In this update, we use operator spending budgets in conjunction with their water recycling programs to estimate how much produced water is being pumped again in fracs.

Two weeks ago in Midland, the Infill Thinking team accounted for 2 of the 513 attendees at the PBWIEC water conference.

This was the second year in this event’s history, and conference attendance was up 17% y/y. The organizers of PBWIEC, a not-for-profit conference, are providing a much needed service to the industry in our view – for produced water is a giant lurking threat to US oil production. Thanks especially to Jonna Smoot for inviting us to cover this event and for her hard work to make it run smoothly.

This conference is helping to accelerate problem solving in oilfield water by advancing industry knowledge on key issues like produced water volumes, induced seismicity, the evolution of water midstream, and clean brine applications in frac.
