In our latest US onshore rig count forecast (updated in April), we estimated that active drilling rigs would peak at 950 units this year.

As we stand today with 934 rigs turning to the right, our prediction leaves only ~16 rig additions left until hitting a US drilling plateau in 2H17.

With 2Q17 earnings season in the books, we summarize the US land rig count outlook of each public onshore driller. Spoiler alert, most seem to agree with our assessment from a quarter ago.

With all the talk of local sands in recent weeks, we thought it’d be worthwhile to map rigs vs. mines.

Shown on our map in this update is the dispersion of the US horizontal rig count plotted against the percentage of US frac sand capacity arising from a half dozen key producing regions.

The holes these horizontal rigs are punching will eventually need sand. Lots and lots of sand. And production is gradually creeping closer to the rigs…

Each winter, we look forward to unwrapping the annual rig census report released by National Oilwell Varco. With it’s uniquely comprehensive rig market history, the report provides good perspective on the competitive landscape for drilling rigs around the world.

There were no surprises on the demand side this year – historically low rig counts have been covered ad nauseam. Not surprisingly, the 2016 survey tallied the lowest reported land rig counts in North America for any year on record. On the other hand, the supply insights were interesting. NOV tracks rigs exiting and entering the market as well as availability across detailed rig classifications.

The full report takes some time to digest, so we’ve prepared a cliff notes version for subscribers in this update, highlighting five things that stood out to us during our review this week. Subscribers are welcome to an excel file containing our charts and the supporting data – email us at hello@infillthinking.com to request your copy.

Leading Independent E&Ps like EOG Resources and Continental Resources are moving quickly now to complete their excess drilled but uncompleted (DUC) well inventories. The recent increase in oil prices into the $45 – $50 range was the signal to complete ’em if you got ’em. In this update we review the specifics and discuss the implications for US production, service contractors, and the nascent recovery.
