This week, Infill Thinking celebrates the three-year anniversary of our very first oilfield research newsletter.

So much has transpired in the oilfield marketplace since we shipped Issue Number 1.

Back then, the Lower 48 oilfield market was just emerging from the brutal 2014 downturn and at the cusp of a nice cyclical upturn. Who knew it would come with so much structural change?

290 Infill Thinking newsletters later, the cycle has rolled over into contraction territory again. Along the way, Infill Thinking has provided members with a front row seat to big shifts and market disruption. Some of these big multi-year themes we’ve followed since their beginnings include the advent of local sand, the last mile Renaissance, the E&P focus on capital discipline, and the emergence of a robust water midstream industry.

Through these ups and downs in the oilfield, Infill Thinking newsletters have been a constant  – arriving twice a week in member inboxes, come rain or shine, delivering insight and analysis that can often only be found here.

It continues to be our great honor to write for you, our valued members, and cover an oilfield industry we truly love. Infill Thinking would simply not exist without the support, input, and feedback of our valued membership, which has grown consistently in each of our three years. So on our birthday, we just want to say Thank You!

Your membership allows us to stay completely independent and free of any corporate advertising/influence on the paid website. This means we are in a rather unique position in our peer group of always putting readers before revenue and delivering truly unbiased perspective on the issues that matter most in the oilfield competitive landscape.

To the many of you that have contributed to our research (either directly with guest posts or offline with us): Thank You!

To everyone that has supported this platform over the past 3 years by reading one of our 290 newsletters or the 1,100 written updates we’ve published, we extend to you our warmest and sincerest thanks.

So cheers from the Infill Thinking team – Joseph Triepke, Mason De Lapp, and Rossi Manchev – celebrating 3 great years and looking forward to many more alongside you as the oilfield cycles ebb and flow…

Calling all San Francisco Infill Thinking members: we’d like to buy you a mid-morning coffee / bite, shake your hand and chat oilfield trends with you.

We are hosting our next reader meet-up event in the Bay Area this coming Monday.

This will be our 5th member appreciation event of 2018.

Meet-Up Details

Our events are informal, come-and-go style networking opportunities. These are non-commercial events with the sole purpose of gathering like-minded folks to compare notes and share knowledge.

  • When: Monday, June 11, 2018 from 10:00am to 12:00pm
  • Where: Mazarine Coffee located in San Francisco’s Financial District. Address: 720 Market St. San Francisco, CA  94102 (415) 398-7700 Note location is subject to change based on group size, so please let us know you are coming (see RSVP instructions below).
  • Who: All paying subscribers are invited to stop by, network, chat and have coffee and a bite on the Infill Thinking tab (the Beet Hummus & Avocado Toast here is killer) Infill Thinking founder and principal research analyst Joseph Triepke will be here for several hours chatting with members while working on our next update.
  • RSVP: Please let us know you are coming by emailing your name and phone number to hello@infillthinking.com. We will contact you if anything about the event changes (this venue is on the smaller side, so depending on the number of RSVPs, we may need to relocate to a larger coffee shop nearby).

For our many readers in other cities around the globe, we will keep you posted when we visit your neck of the woods! Later this year, we are planning more events in other finance hubs and oilfields, so stay tuned. We hope to meet up with you one day soon.

Why We Are In Town

Infill Thinking founder Joseph Triepke has been invited to participate in an energy investor conference hosted by Wells Fargo on the West Coast next week. Joseph will be one of the speakers at the event, joining an esteemed panel to discuss US frac supply chain trends (see panel details below).

Infill Thinking’s subscriber base increased seven-fold during the first three months of 2017.

If you are reading this, you have some fast growing company! You also have some high-IQ company. Our trusted research updates are now helping many high-ranking oilfield executives to make better business decisions and stay ahead of trends.

We’d like to thank everyone who has given this new resource a look. We’ve challenged you to re-think your market intelligence sources. We’ve asked you to support a reader-funded platform free of corporate sponsor influence. And we’ve worked hard to deliver on our core mission, closing thought gaps in traditional reporting to lift the oilfield knowledge curve. Your response has been positive and encouraging.

It is humbling to see the elite names joining daily now. We have a great deal of respect for the contribution you make to this industry, and we are honored to serve you with high-caliber oilfield updates. With Infill Thinking turning six months old in April, we thank you for the warm reception.

Here are several Top 5 Infill Thinking lists for 1Q17 (our first full quarter of operation).

Top 5 Stories

We issued 82 research updates during 1Q17. As measured by the number of reads, here are the Infill Thinking updates our readers found most valuable:

  1. Encana’s 64-Well Monster – A Permian One-Off Or The Pad Of The Future?
  2. A Massive Paradigm Shift In Frac Sand’s Last Mile Is Happening Now
  3. A Frac Sand Mine Lands In The Permian. This Could Transform The Competitive Sandscape [Exclusive Details]
  4. Unintended Consequences – The Crude Price Risk Factor No One Is Talking About… Yet
  5. Is Baker Hughes Over-Innovating?

Top 5 Newsletters

We shipped 25 newsletters during the first quarter. Our open rate averaged 59%, which to our knowledge is the highest of any newsletter in the oilfield today. Based on analysis conducted by our email service provider, e-newsletters in our category average an open rate of 15-25%. Here are the five that our readers found the most intriguing:

  1. Schlumberger Grows Again, FRAC Inauguration, Earnings Considerations, and more…
  2. One Frac, Two Frac, Red Frac, Blue Frac; US/Saudi Inversion; Meet The Author; and more…
  3. What Labor Loss? O&G’s Worst Neighborhood, Big Sand, and more…
  4. Sand Bandits Strike, Offshore Quandary, HAL Mows ‘Em Down, and more…
  5. Sand Crush, Seadrill Clones, Halliburton Rumors, Permian Ramp Leveling? and more…

Top 5 Debates

A little controversy is good – it means we’ve struck an issue our readers are grappling with as well. Based on reader feedback and conversations with many of you offline, here are the oilfield topics we wrote on during 1Q17 that sparked the most debate. The jury is still out on the final answer on these, but you can bet we’ll be writing about them for the rest of the year!
