A Brief History Of Time: Data Science In Energy Edition [Friday Guest Post]

Guest Contributor Introduction From Joseph Triepke:  A couple months ago, an Infill Thinking subscriber from a large oilfield service firm gave me the heads up on something exciting happening in Houston. He told me about a group called Houston Energy Data Science, or HEDS for short.

HEDS is a relatively new meet-up for data scientists in Energy, and it’s been growing fast. The non-commercial monthly meet-ups attract upwards of 100 attendees – including some of our industry’s data rockstars – who gather to share knowledge and talk about disruption and progression.

I asked the founder of the HEDs meet-ups, Francisco Sanchez, to write in with some thoughts about how the group came together as well as the state of data science in the energy industry in general. Francisco is himself a leading data scientist in O&G and has a fast growing consulting practice. There is no shortage of interest in his ideas today, but he remembers a time not long ago when the O&G industry’s door was closed to data science applications.

Francisco’s post on Infill Thinking is part tribute to a late great scientist, part O&G history, and part O&G prediction. His conversational manner of addressing this technical space is a breath of fresh air. To non-technical pros, data science often seems esoteric and difficult to grasp. Not today. This is a fun read (yes, I just said that about a data science post).

Towards the end of this update, don’t miss Francisco’s thoughts on the companies that have done the best at adopting data science and where we go next… login below to read
