What Labor Loss? So Far Re-Hiring Concerns Seem Overblown

In the US onshore market, skilled workers are returning to the oilfield jobs they were doing a couple years ago en masse.

We talked to a drilling consultant in West Texas this week who has been filling his days with dirt work during the downturn. He just got called back to the well-site this week, and he traded his expanding dirt business for sub-surface problem solving in a nano-second.

Once the oilfield gets in your blood it’s hard to get it out. The best oilfield workers have mastered specific workflows over many years. Many had a high degree of jobs satisfaction, not to mention a good paycheck. The sudden downturn forced many to transition to roles they don’t enjoy, aren’t good at, or don’t pay as well.

Despite growing concerns to the contrary, evidence is emerging that they are answering the call when their old employers ask them to return. Worker memories are proving short. Pending a double dip in the next year or two, this downturn will not be the source of another Great Crew Change.
