The US Frac Sand Renaissance & Charts Illustrating The Supply Stack Transformation

Yesterday morning, we had an opportunity to get out of the weeds a little bit and think about the big picture. We were preparing for an “introduction to the frac sand market” conference call with a consulting client who is new to the space and looking to get up to speed fast.

Pulling some high level comments together, we were reminded why this oilfield niche has received so much attention this year (both from us and other analysts). No other oilfield vertical is being reinvented as completely and rapidly as frac sand at the moment. It is quite possible that no oilfield segment of this size has ever been reinvented this completely and rapidly in the history of O&G.

Dramatic change is happening in four key market facets: new logistics, new procurement models, new demand, and new supply. We offer brief comments on each and then dive into the supply transformation with three charts illustrating market share for the key players and how it is evolving.
